En el documental Matriarcados: La isla de las mujeres, se relata la historia de una comunidad de la isla Orango Grande, en el archipiélago de las Bijagós, frente a la costa de Guinea Bissau, donde las mujeres gobiernan, gestionan la economía y son respetadas.
Según afirma en su blog la antropóloga Anna Boye, “en esta comunidad bijagó de Orango Grande cada sexo tiene funciones diferentes, las mujeres siguen la tradición de sus antepasados y organizan el trabajo, la gestión de la economía y la ley, pero con un sistema de valores que aprecia al hombre por su sensibilidad y delicadeza y lo valora por las labores que realiza como son el barbecho de los campos, la caza y la pesca. Se le toma en cuenta a la hora de decidir las cuestiones de la comunidad para procurar el bien común”.
La investigadora afirma sentir “un gran amor por el estudio de estas sociedades matriarcales porque a través del saber que adquiero de ellas aprendo que hay nuevas maneras de organizar la sociedad, nuevas maneras de ser, y éste es un reto que me obliga a revisar todo lo aprendido”.
